Fun in the sun

Bugsie at the playground

Bugsie at the playground

We have got into the habit of spending a few hours at the same playground next to the beach each weekend. I’m not sure why this particular park feels so special to us. Perhaps it’s because it’s in walking distance of the house we rented for the first five weeks in Perth, so we spent a lot of time there while we were still settling in. Perhaps it’s because it seems to be a fairly diverse area, and we can always be sure of hearing “foreign” accents – South African, Arab, Filipino, Indian, British, Chinese. Perhaps it’s because the playground close to the sea, which always feels like “home” for us. Whatever the reason, the kids love to play there, and it’s relaxing for AnoneeDad and I to sit on the grass in the perfect Perth winter sunshine and enjoy a flask of coffee.

Yesterday AnoneeDad was diving, so I took the kids down myself, and it was just about perfect (until the kids had an argument and I dragged their whiny butts home, but that’s another story). The news today was that yesterday was 21C, the warmest July day in 2 years, and after about 10 days of miserable rainy weather,  sitting in the sun was a form of meditation.

We’re back to rain and cold this today. Let’s hope it lifts by the weekend.

Growing up

As reluctant as I am to admit it, Bugsie boy is not my little baby anymore.  He is starting to show all the strength of will and opinion typical of a Tremendous Two, and “I do it self” is the phrase we most frequently hear from his determined little mouth.

As with Chick, we are happy (if sometimes a little frustrated with the messy outcomes) for him to explore and learn. Here he is tackling a banana with a knife. The bonus? He is much happier to eat food he cut himself!

I promise…

Chick made her Girl Guide promise today. She is now officially a Dolphin Guide, the equivalent of the old Brownies.  It was a real sense of deja vu for me, as much of the ceremony was familiar from my own enrolment in Brownies 30 years ago in a different country. I remember the rhyme “Twist me and turn me and show me the elf, I looked in the mirror and there saw myself”. I remember the mirror camouflaged as a pond. I remember the song “This Little Guiding Light of Mine”. And I definitely remember the fun of earning badges. Chick is dead keen to get started and I think she will enjoy it just as much as I did.
